Gender and Gender Based Violence

Gender is a social construction of roles, rights, power, and expectations on the basis of sex that is deeply rooted in social norms. Gender-based violence (GBV) is any act of violence that's directed at someone because of their gender or that disproportionately affects people of a particular gender.

In emergency contexts, women, girls, men, and boys face different risks when it comes to a deteriorating nutritional status. For women and girls in particular, oppressive gender norms and gender-based violence (GBV) have a negative impact on their health and nutrition, especially in emergencies. A unified commitment across the humanitarian community to address these issues as well as nutrition programming that takes into account gender and GBV issues at all stages of the project cycle can greatly improve the nutrition outcomes for women and girls in emergencies.

The Gender and Gender-based Violence Working Group

The Gender and GBV Working Group exists so that all humanitarian health and nutrition organisations can be equipped to respond to gender inequality and engage in GBV risk mitigation within their organisations and in their work with crisis affected populations. In line with this vision, the Working Group guides and supports the integration of gender equity and GBV risk mitigation across the GNC at the global- and national-level. The Working Group shares an active voice within the sector in conversations on gender, GBV risk mitigation, and Nutrition in Emergencies.

Key Activities

  • Facilitate discussions, reflections, and guidance across the GNC to ensure that gender and GBV risk mitigation are incorporated into its ways of working
  • Act as a champion for gender and nutrition across the global nutrition sector, including among technical working groups, donors, and key stakeholders
  • Ensure the GNC and GNC members’ gender and GBV networks stay well informed and are aware of relevant tools and resources
  • Identify and develop best practices and lessons learned on gender and GBV risk mitigation in nutrition and sharing these lessons with in-country actors and in the wider humanitarian sector.
  • Support the integration of gender and GBV risk mitigation into nutrition programmes in emergency contexts through remote and in-country deployments
