From Global Guidance to National Action: Updating Acute Malnutrition Protocols in Latin America and the Caribbean

This regional webinar, organized by the Global Nutrition Cluster (GNC), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and UNICEF’s Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, focused on updating national protocols for the prevention and management of acute malnutrition in the region.

The objective was to strengthen the knowledge of decision-makers and personnel working in child health and nutrition on the latest World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the prevention and treatment of acute malnutrition in infants and children under five years of age, and to provide guidance on the development, review, and updating of national protocols.

  1. Regional overview of child acute malnutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean 

    Presentation of a summary of the current situation in the region.

  2. WHO Guideline (2023) on the prevention and management of acute malnutrition 

    Review of the most recent recommendations for the prevention and treatment of child acute malnutrition.

  3. Status of national protocols in the region   

    Synthesis of the study on national protocols on child acute malnutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean.

  4. Practical guidance for updating protocols  

    Guidance on the process for updating national guidelines, based on UNICEF’s Brief Guide to Updating National Guidelines on Child Wasting (2024).

  5. Country experience: Mexico  

    Presentation of the process of updating national guidelines, highlighting opportunities, challenges, and lessons learned.

  6. Q&A and discussion session
