Earthquake in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan | 2 September 2025 Update

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Nangarhar Province on 31 August 2025, leaving 1,400+ dead, 3,100 injured, and 5,400 homes destroyed; humanitarian partners have deployed 25 assessment teams to affected areas.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing with helicopters transporting the wounded to hospitals; weak housing structures and heavy rains worsened the impact.

An initial US$10 million in emergency funding (CERF and AHF) has been released, with additional donor support (including £1 million from the UK); urgent needs include shelter, medical supplies, food, water, and sanitation.

ONGOING CONSTRAINTS

Funding shortages have significantly undermined nutrition cluster coordination efforts, particularly at the regional level.

Uncertainty and restrictions have further hampered emergency nutrition programming in multiple ways, including population displacement, a weakened health system, restrictions on female aid workers, a fragile banking and financial sector, limited road and air transport, and prolonged customs and border clearance for supplies.

Meanwhile, recurring natural disasters – such as earthquakes, floods, harsh winters, and droughts – have compounded the crisis, placing additional strain on already limited resources and leaving fragile populations in even greater humanitarian need.
